2022, what even were you…

You were the year of suddenly there was nothing left but holding on. Not living, not doing all those things I came here for. Just making it through. The first time ever I didn’t know if I would. Physically, mentally, financially.
.
Last time I felt half as bad as this, my doctor gave me a year of sick leave for a burnout. This time I dragged myself to work every single day. And it was different. Worse. This time around it wasn’t about finding the things that needed to change and ‘just’ change them. This time I was doing everything right. And all I could do was keep on waiting for that external change that I needed so much.
.
You were a year of loss. I lost 4 cats. 2 Belgian family members. The attempt to meet my best friend’s child before he was able to walk. The ability to spend a single day without immense back pain. The house I grew up in. Hope. My father.
.
Not to death… but to a decision that was the only option left. A decision that took me 40 years to make and that I’ll have to carry for the rest of my life. One that I have no idea how. How do you grieve a person that’s still alive?
.
At times I lost me.
.
You were also the year of regained hope. Of almost being too scared to allow it. Of looking for joy in the tiniest of things. Of the kind of help I had never known. The feeling of ‘they got me’ from the most unexpected angles. Of self-care and growth. Of pushing through.
.
You were the year of our first 6-figure tour booking. Of people having THAT kind of trust in me. Of sitting there trembling because I could barely believe it was true. Of the purest gratefulness.
.
The year of more ‘normal’ bookings and sales any beginning business can really dream of and ending the year with a profit. Even though we only started working again in June. The year of my first salary since August 2017. Of knowing I deserve it but being too scared to believe it’s actually happening. Of slowly daring to dream again of that life I came here for.

2022… I still don’t know what the hell you were and that’s ok. It’s time to stop wondering, and say goodbye.
